Bob cut - 20s hairstyle

A classic short hairstyle where the ends are cut just around chin length and aligned close to the facial area. A bowl can also be placed on the top of the head and the remaining part of the head can be shaved very short. This style is most common among women.

Made internationally popular by American film star Colleen Moore in the early 1920s, it was then seen as a somewhat shocking statement of independence in young women, as older people were used to seeing girls wearing long dresses and heavy Edwardian-style hair. Hairdressers, whose training was mainly in arranging and curling long hair, were slow to realise that short styles for women had arrived to stay, and so barbers in many cities found lines of women waiting outside their shops, waiting to be shorn of hair that had taken many years to grow.

Pixie Hair Cut tutorial - 20s hairstyles

A pixie cut refers to a short woman's hairstyle generally short on the back and sides of the head and slightly longer on the top. Women began exploring shorter hairstyles in the 1920s.

It has since been a rollercoaster trend and has been reappearing and disappearing frequently throughout the years. In the past year the pixie cut has been brought back into the spotlight, being worn by world famous stars and models such as Alyssa Milano, Keira Knightley, Rihanna, Katie Holmes, Agyness Deyn, Elisha Cuthbert, Victoria Beckham, Ashley Greene, Lauren Holly and others.

Pixie cuts work best on women with thin straight hair. Fine features, such as high cheek bones and large eyes, are accentuated with this hairstyle. Depending on the style, pixies range from as short as a half inch in some places to two or three inches long in others. Pixies are very easy to care for and can be worn casually, or dressed up for special occasions.
